Event - Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations

10 June 2016

Friday 10th June turned out to be an extremely memorable day for Scalford School, as we celebrated Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th official birthday and were visited by our very own Queen for the Day, Mrs Rita Robinson.

Mrs Robinson taught at Scalford School for many years and celebrated her own 90th birthday in May. She joined us for a very special assembly where the children sang her favourite childhood hymn and a song ‘The Red, Red Robin’ which was written in the year she was born. They also read passages from 1926 that had been recorded in the Scalford School Log Books and also entries which were made whilst Mrs Robinson worked at the school. She was presented with a personal royal crown and flowers to mark the occasion and then joined us for a tea party fit for a queen - including a very British birthday cake.

A team from BBC East Midlands Today joined us for the afternoon to film our event, and interviewed some children and staff which was then televised later in the day.

To add to the excitement, the children made and sent birthday cards to the Queen and this week they received a letter from Buckingham Palace thanking them.

It was a very special day and we hope it is something that everyone involved will remember for many years to come.
